18歳の内気な娘フェイFayeは、男にだらしのない母親に対する嫌悪感を抱きつつも、その愛を欲してもいる。まだ母親の精神的ケアに頼りたい年齢にも関わらず、奔放な母親の面倒を見なければならない事も多い。心の内に葛藤を抱えつつも、様々な出来事を経たフェイは、大人としての一つの決断を下す。

理髪店を営むシングルマザーと年頃を迎えた娘、双児のような母娘の愛憎半ばの関係を描く。最小限のセリフの中、登場人物の仕草や姿を通して、その感情が語られる。ワンシーンワンカット、固定カメラで長回しを多用した作風は、みずみずしく女性的な感性と共に、刺々しく生々しい生理的な表現をも映し出す。繊細さの光る背景描写も作品の根底に流れる繊細な感情のうねりの表現に一役買っている。故郷である古都マラッカを舞台に、俊才シャーット･リムが放った長編第一作。

本作品は、『ポケットの花』の制作者であるミッシェル･ロー、彼女が長らく助監督を務めるホー･ユーハンなどが制作プロデュースを担当。2009年マラケシュ国際映画祭にて審査員特別賞受賞。2009年釜山国際映画祭、2010年ロッテルダム国際映画祭コンペ部門公式出品作。他にロンドン、ブエノスアイレス、○○○など、数多くの国際映画祭にて公式上映された。

シャーロット･リムは、ツァイ･ミンリャン、アン･リー、ホー･ユーハンなど多くの監督の作品で助監督としての経験を重ねながら、現在は短編を中心にキャリアを重ねている。機知に富み好奇心旺盛ながら、鋭い観察眼と思慮深さを持つ彼女は、マレーシア映画界の重要な戦力となっている。これまでに『La invitation』（2005）、『Escape』(2008/26mins)、『I’m Lisa』（2011/8min. ロッテルダム映画祭短編コンペ部門・審査員特別賞）『Hanger』（2012/13mins）、などを発表。現在は初のドキュメンタリー作品制作にチャレンジしており、こちらの作品もマラッカが主な舞台となる予定。

Faye, a timid 18 year-old girl, is disgusted with her sexually corrupt mother,

and yet is craving for her affection. Although she is still young and is in need of maternal emotional care, Faye often has to take care of her wild mother. She makes her way through a series of encounters, making decisions as an adult, despite her constant internal struggle.

The film depicts the love-hate, sororal relationship between the single mother, who runs a barber shop, and her adolescent daughter. Structured around minimal dialogues, the characters’ emotions are revealed through gestures and appearances. Sequence shots and long takes, shooting with fixed camera, reflect young female sensitivity, and the film depicts a sharp, rawly physical mode of expression. The brilliantly delicate portrayal of scenery serves to describe the exquisite flow of sentiment underlying the whole film. This is the first feature film by Charlotte LIM, and the story unfolds in her hometown, the historic city of Malacca.

My Daughter is produced by HO Yuhang, for whom Lim has worked for years as an assistant director, and Michelle LO, the producer of Flower in The Pocket. It is the winner of The Jury Prize at The International Film Festival of Marrakech, and was an Official Selection for the Competition category of the 2009 Pusan International Film Festival and the 2010 International Film Festival, Rotterdam. The film was officially screened at numerous international film festivals, such as London International Film Festival, Buenos Aires International Festival.

Charlotte LIM has gained experience as an assistant director to the directors TSAI Ming-liang, Ang LEE, and HO Yuhang, and is now building her career mainly in the short film category. Full of wit and curiosity, insightful and thoughtful, Lim has become a great asset for the Malaysian film industry. Her past works include “La invitation” (2005), ”Escape” (2008/26mins), ”I’m Lisa” (2011/8mins, received Special Jury Mention at the Tiger Awards Competition for Short Films, International Film Festival Rotterdam), and ”Hanger” (2012/13mins). Lim is currently working on her first documentary film, which will also feature Malacca as its main location.

卒業をひかえた高校生のヤスミンに、思いを寄せる同級生の家から結婚の申し入れが来た。貧しい生活の中、病気の母を世話していたヤスミンは、その母親の面倒も見てくれるという良縁に喜んで承諾する。しかし、彼女を待ち受けていたのは、どうする事も出来ない過酷な運命だった。

ヤスミン・アフマド監督の作品群で主演を務めたシャリファ・アマニの初監督作品。ヤスミン監督の作風を受け継ぐような巧みなドラマツルギー、映像が切ない情感を伝える秀作。この作品が収録されたHerStory Malaysia Projectは、マレーシア女性の個々の物語をアートの形で「いかに共有していくか」追求する企画。『サンカル』はその第１弾であるフィルム・プロジェクト（2009年～10年に制作）の一編であり、モノクロ作品(一部パートカラー)として発表された。今回上映されるのは、カラー映像がメインのディレクターズ･カット版である。

クアラ・ルンプールに降り立った日本人男性タツミは、失踪した弟ユウジの行方を捜している。手がかりは送られてきた意味不明の手紙と、現地で撮ったと思われる弟の顔写真のみ。弟はある儲け話に乗ったものの失敗して多額の借金を背負い、タツミと父親の経営していた工場と実家は借金の形に取られてしまった。そしてタツミが最後に弟に向けて言い放ったのは「死んで詫びろ！」という言葉だった。中華レストランで途方に暮れていたタツミは、知り合った男に誘導されるままに飛び込んだ売春宿で、リンという子持ちの売春婦と知り合う。彼女のアパートには息子のヨウと友人のメイが一緒に住んでいた。タツミにはかつて妻子がいたが、彼の暴力が元で離婚していた。リンとその息子ヨウの姿に、彼らを投影し、タツミは後悔の念にとらわれるのだった・・・。

冒頭、クルーァン（コーラン）集団章第53節からの引用で始まるこの作品は、ある兄弟の贖罪の旅を描いた物語である。失踪した弟を捜しにクアラ・ルンプールまでやってきた兄は、自分が犯してきた数々の罪に気づき、弟の罪を許すまでに至る。劇中、モスクでイスラム教徒の女性が説明する「ベラートの夜」とは、神のもと全ての罪が許されるというイスラム世界で一年に一度ある懺悔の夜のこと。クアラ・ルンプールの街の雑踏や近郊の美しい自然を切り取った湿潤な画面、心地よく響く音楽が、観る者をある種の癒しへと誘う。TV業界でキャリアを積んだ細井尊人監督の長編第一作目は、安定した語り口と卓越したカメラワークで、新人とは思えない老練さを見せる。暴力的で寡黙な男という難しい役柄を桧山あきひろが好演。娼婦リンを演じたシャリファ・アマニも、自身の新境地に挑んだ演技を見せている。

Arriving at Kuala Lumpur, a Japanese guy, Tatsumi, searches for his missing younger brother Yuji. The only clue is an incomprehensible letter sent from KL and a photo of Yuji which is assumed to have been taken somewhere in this town. Yuji had unsuccessfully joined a money-making scheme and had got into a huge debt. Both his family home and the factory run by Tatsumi and his father had been used in payments for Yuji’s debt. The last word Tatsumi had thrown at his brother was “Apologize by your own death!”. Bewildered in KL, Tatsumi meets a guy at a Chinese restaurant and is taken to a brothel. There he encounters a prostitute named Ryn who is living in an apartment with her son Yoh and her friend May. Tatsumi once had a wife and a child, but had divorced due to his domestic violence. Seeing his own reflection in Ryn and Yoh, Tatsumi suffers from a sense of repentance….

The story begins with a recitation of The Quran (Surat Az-Zumar, Verse 53), and follows the journey of two brothers seeking redemption. The older brother comes all the way to Kuala Lumpur to find his younger brother, and realizes the numerous sins he has committed in his life. This recognition finally leads him to forgive his brother. “Berat Kandil”, explained by a Muslim woman at the mosque, means the night of confession that comes once every year in the Islamic world when all sins are forgiven with the presence of God. The wet images of the town’s crowds and the beautiful nature of the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur, together with the comfortable music, invite us to the magic of healing. After building his career in the field of TV programs, Takato HOSOI proves his established movie-making skills in this, his first feature film, with his steady manner of storytelling and efficient use of camera. Akihiro HIYAMA portrays the difficult role of Tatsumi, who is violent and also a man of few words. Sharifah Amani has opened up a new territory in her acting by playing the role of Ryn, the prostitute.
