デイン･サイードはクアラルンプールで生まれた後、幼少期よりエジプト、フランス、イギリスなど様々な国に住んだ経験を持つ。ロンドン大学ウェストミンスター･カレッジ卒業後、英国にて主にTV番組制作に従事。その時代の短編作品として『Surabaya Johnny』（1990）があり、この作品はオーストラリアで書籍としても刊行された。90年代半ばにマレーシアへ帰国後は広告・TV番組制作のかたわら、メディア･インスタレーション･アーティストとしても活動。その作品はthe Biennale of Sydney や the UBC Museum of Anthropology in Vancouverなどで公開され、ドバイのthe Burj al-Arabに所蔵されている。2007年に初長編映画『Dukun』を発表するが、この作品は様々な事情により一切の公開が認められず、本作『Bunohan』が実質的なデビュー作となる。

An assassin, Ilham, who has returned to his hometown after many years, has been hired by a Thai hit-man, Deng, to kill a man named Bunga Larang. At the same time, Bakar, a school-teacher in the city, is ambitious for business success and plots to sell his father’s ancestral land to a developer. Their younger brother, Adil, appears in the ring as a Malay traditional martial artist, a Tomoi kick-boxer. Bunga Larang, whom the brother Ilham has to deal with, is in fact the ring name for Adil. Their father, who is a shadow puppet master, refuses to let go of the land, and the feud among the three brothers over the inheritance of the property reveals the secrets of their birth.

Set in a fictitious village, Bunohan, on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula close to the Thai border, it is an infinitely beautiful, yet bestial and tragic drama of three brothers, who are an assassin, a businessman and a boxer. Based on the film noir style, it could be described as the Malay version of The Brothers Karamazov. It gathers the threads of the multi-layered sceneries of the world of the traditional shadow play, wayang kulit, and a landscape that awakens memories of the indigenous land of Malaysia. There are themes of native culture, nature and the community that is being destroyed… Who is the real puppeteer of this story? This work brings unprecedented texture and dignity that have not been seen before in Malay films.

Bunohan won the Golden Hanoman Award at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival, and the NETPAC award at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival. It was awarded with the Best Film and the Best Screenplay awards at the Screen Awards in Malaysia. At the Filem Festival Malaysia, aka Malaysian Academy Awards, the film won 8 categories including the Best Picture, the Best Director, the Best Screenplay, and the Best Actor awards, winning most awards of this year. The work has been screened as the official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Rotterdam International Film Festival and many others. Also, the film is Malaysia’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Dain Said grew up and lived in various countries, including Egypt, France and Italy. After graduating from London University of Westminster, he worked mainly on television programs in the UK. His short film Surabaya Johnny (1990) was made at that time and was also published in Australia as a novel. Returning to Malaysia in the mid 1990s, besides establishing himself in the television industry and commercials, Dain Said has worked actively as a media installation artist. His work was screened at the Biennale of Sydney, and at the University of British Colombia Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver and is on permanent display at the Burj al-Arab, in Dubai. His first feature film Dukun was directed in 2007. However, the controversial film was banned and has never been released. As a result Bunohan has become in a way his debut film.

本作の監督であるエフェンディ、ファリザの二人は共にクアラ・ルンプール生まれ。コンビで数々の作品を手がける二人は、実生活でもパートナーである。エフェンディは映画現場のキャリアが長く、TVドラマのディレクターとしても活躍する他、数々のミュージック・ヴィデオを手がける。ファリザは画家として作品を発表しながら、TV番組のプロデュースや俳優活動も行うなどのキャリアを持つ。二人は、同名TVドラマ・シリーズ『Kami』の人気を受けて制作された映画『Kami：The Movie』（2008）で長編映画デビュー。本作『Songlap』は2作目の共同監督作品となる。

The two brothers Am and Ad are petty mobsters who belong to a baby-trafficking syndicate in Kuala Lumpur. Ad, the younger brother, dreams of winning a hip hop dance competition someday in order to wash his hands of illegal business. Am is a gambling addict and is always busy managing to raise money. Abandoned by their mother, the two brothers have raised themselves. Such a background has tied them together strongly despite their opposing personalities. Meanwhile, Hawa, the pregnant sister of Ad’s best friend, a friend who died of a drug overdose, runs away from home, hiding from her father. However, she falls victim to the baby-trafficking syndicate and ends up being sent to a desolate birthing facility. There she comes across Am and Ad. The circumstances surrounding Hawa and her baby remind Ad of his own upbringing, and he decides to take action…

クアラ・ルンプールに降り立った日本人男性タツミは、失踪した弟ユウジの行方を捜している。手がかりは送られてきた意味不明の手紙と、現地で撮ったと思われる弟の顔写真のみ。弟はある儲け話に乗ったものの失敗して多額の借金を背負い、タツミと父親の経営していた工場と実家は借金の形に取られてしまった。そしてタツミが最後に弟に向けて言い放ったのは「死んで詫びろ！」という言葉だった。 中華レストランで途方に暮れていたタツミは、知り合った男に誘導されるままに飛び込んだ売春宿で、リンという子持ちの売春婦と知り合う。彼女のアパートには息子のヨウと友人のメイが一緒に住んでいた。タツミにはかつて妻子がいたが、彼の暴力が元で離婚していた。リンとその息子ヨウの姿に、彼らを投影し、タツミは後悔の念にとらわれるのだった・・・。

冒頭、クルーァン（コーラン）集団章第53節からの引用で始まるこの作品は、ある兄弟の贖罪の旅を描いた物語である。失踪した弟を捜しにクアラ・ルンプールまでやってきた兄は、自分が犯してきた数々の罪に気づき、弟の罪を許すまでに至る。劇中、モスクでイスラム教徒の女性が説明する「ベラートの夜」とは、神のもと全ての罪が許されるというイスラム世界で一年に一度ある懺悔の夜のこと。クアラ・ルンプールの街の雑踏や近郊の美しい自然を切り取った湿潤な画面、心地よく響く音楽が、観る者をある種の癒しへと誘う。TV業界でキャリアを積んだ細井尊人監督の長編第一作目は、安定した語り口と卓越したカメラワークで、新人とは思えない老練さを見せる。暴力的で寡黙な男という難しい役柄を桧山あきひろが好演。娼婦リンを演じたシャリファ・アマニも、自身の新境地に挑んだ演技を見せている。

73年にクアラ・ルンプールで生まれたリム・カーワイ（林家威）は93年に来日し、98年大阪大学基礎工学部電気工学科を卒業。外資系通信会社でエンジニアとして６年働いた後、04年から北京電影学院の監督コースで学び、『プラスティック・シティ』『墨攻』『夜の上海』など数々の現場で助監督やコーディネーターを経験する。そして09年、北京で撮影された『それから（アフター・オール・ズィーズ・イヤーズ）』で長編デビュー。この作品は2010年香港国際映画祭、大阪アジアン映画祭、サンパウロ国際映画祭にて公式上映された。2作目の『マジック＆ロス』は香港で撮影し、釜山国際映画祭、香港国際映画祭他で公式上映の他、様々な映画祭で話題となった。３作目である本作品『新世界の夜明け』では大阪・新世界を舞台とし、CO2(シネアスト・オーガニゼーション大阪)で観客賞＆技術賞をW受賞。

Coco is a girl from Beijing who was brought up in ease and comfort. Fed up with her boyfriend who doesn’t give her any of his time, she goes to Osaka alone to spend a wonderful Christmas there. However, the inn introduced to her by her friend is actually a guest house which has been renovated from a cheap lodging house in the Shinsekai (“new world”) neighborhood of Osaka. While feeling disillusioned by the gap between the reality and the image of Japan she held, Coco encounters several Chinese people living in Japan, along with Japanese people from a variety of backgrounds and all with their own stories and troubles.

The characters roam freely around the city of Shinsekai, where the taste of old Osaka remains strong. Exuding light and easy humor and containing elements of action, the story reverses the typical images of Japan and China in a sophisticated manner, and escapes the trappings of nationality. Through the characters of the Chinese in Japan, and the Japanese themselves, the film depicts multifaceted figures of contemporary China and Japan. Having studied in both Japan and China, the director LIM Kah Wai maintains a unique standpoint and critical spirit which enabled him to create this unprecedented, stateless film.

LIM Kah Wai was born in Kuala Lumpur in 1973. Coming to Japan in 1993, he graduated from the Department of Electronic Engineering, School of Engineering Science, at Osaka University, in 1998. After working for a foreign telecom company as an engineer for 6 years, he started to study directing at Beijing Film Academy from 2004, and worked as an assistant director and a coordinator on the sets of several films, such as Plastic City, A Battle of Wits, and The Longest Night in Shanghai. Lim made his feature film debut in 2009 with After All These Years, which was shot in Beijing. This debut film was officially screened at the 2010 Hong Kong International Film Festival, Osaka Asian Film Festival, and São Paulo International Film Festival. His second feature film, Magic and Loss was shot in Hong Kong and screened officially at the Pusan International Film Festival and the Hong Kong International Film Festival, also gathering attention at various other film festivals. The third film by the director, New World, is set in Shinsekai, Osaka, and became a double winner, of the Audience Award and the Technical Contribution Award, at CO2 (Cineastes Organization Osaka).
