ウォン・ファミリーの組織で働くサニーは、腕利きの借金取り立て屋。彼はある日、事務所近くの路上で占い師から「今の仕事を辞めないと、死を伴う悪運から逃れられない」との運勢を告げられた。元々「無駄な暴力や脅しは好まず、誠意で金を払わせる」のを好むサニーは、この占い師の言葉をきっかけに、３年間付き合っているエヴァと幸せな家庭を築きたいと、ヤクザな稼業から足を洗う事を考えるようになる。そんな折、彼はある取り立て先で病気の母と少年に出会い、彼らの面倒を見ざる終えない状況となった。少年の父親ニウは、ウォン・ファミリーに敵対するティン・ファミリーからも借金をして失踪中。どうやらその背後には別の事件も絡んでいるようだ。サニーは少年を守りつつ、仲間達とニウの行方を追いはじめる。

日本でも『美しい洗濯機』(’04)（劇中で自虐ネタとしても登場）『私達が恋に落ちる前に』(’06)などで知られるリー監督は、マレーシア新潮を牽引するアート系インディペンデント作品を撮る一方で、エンターテイメント作品もこなす両刀使い。しかも多作な映画監督である。本格マーシャル・アーツ・コメディの本作は、香港映画を凌駕するカンフー・アクションも魅力だが、存在感ある登場人物のキャラクターと、どこかとぼけた人懐っこい笑いが、南国マレーシアのスパイスのように効いてくる作品。前々作のホラー『Sini Ada Hantu』(’11)や、前作の時代物冒険活劇『プタリン・ストリート・ウォリアーズ (大英雄・小男人) 』(’11、共同監督)も本国でヒットを記録。本作は商業作として後者の部類だが、サニー・パン演じる主人公の設定はアート系ギャング映画『黒夜行路』(’09)の主人公オーキァに通じるところもあり、両作の作風の違いを比べてみるのも一興だろう。

Sunny is a skilled debt collector who works for the syndicate run by the Wong Family. One day, a street fortune-teller near his office says to him, “Unless you quit your current job, you won’t escape from a misfortune which will bring you death.” Being a good-tempered person by nature, Sunny prefers to make people pay with sincerity rather than resorting to violence or threat, and so he starts to think of quitting the gangster business and making a peaceful home with Eva, his girlfriend of 3 years, after hearing this fortune-telling. Soon after that, he meets a sick mother and her son during one of his collection rounds, and ends up taking care of them. The boy’s father, Ah-niu, is also in debt to the Ting Family, the enemy to the Wong Family, and is currently missing. Ongoing in the background is the criminal case of his disappearance. While trying to protect the boy, Sunny and his buddies follow the trail of Ah-niu.

The director James LEE is famous in Japan for The Beautiful Washing Machine (2004; this movie is mentioned in The Collector in a self-deprecating manner) and Before We Fall in Love Again (2006). While making independent art-house films which have led the “Malaysian New Wave”, Lee is also efficient at directing entertaining movies. He is also a prolific film director. The Collector is an authentic martial arts comedy with the attractive kung-fu action scenes even outperforming Hong Kong films. Yet still, its larger-than-life characters and innocent and friendly humor are effective like the spices of tropical Malaysia. Both the last but one horror film Sini Ada Hantu (2011) and the last film Petaling Street Warriors (2011, Co-director) became hits in Malaysia. Although The Collector can be categorized with the latter as a commercial film, the protagonist portrayed by Sunny Pang has something in common with Or Kia, the main character of an artistic gangster film Call If You Need Me (2009). It will be interesting to compare the different styles of both films.

ロマンティックなウェディング･フォトをイスタンブールで撮るため、現地を訪れるディアンの回想から物語は始まる…2年前、彼女は同じ様にイスタンブール行きの飛行機に乗っていた。目的は3ヶ月の語学留学、でも本当の目的は｢何とかして彼氏にプロポーズさせなくちゃ！｣である。イスタンブールの医大へ通う恋人のアザドのシェア・アパートメントに一緒に住んで、美味しい手料理を食べさせて…優柔不断な恋人をその気にさせるため作戦を練っていたディアン。だが結局は、シェア・メイトの目を気にする彼から、他に部屋を借りるよう言い渡される。ションボリしていたのもつかの間、ボスボラス海峡を臨む夢のようにロマンティックな部屋を見つけた彼女は、すぐさま荷物を運び込み、くつろいでいた。すると見知らぬ男が入って来る。ハリスはその部屋の住人で、彼女はどうやら部屋を二重貸しする詐欺にあったらしい。…ロマンティックな古都での、新しい恋の予感もあり…果たして、2年後に彼女と結婚するのは誰？

東京国際映画祭で紹介された『ゴールと口紅』(’05)『グッバイ・ボーイズ』(’06)で知られるバーナード・チョウリー監督の新作は、マレーシア人気No.1女優の一人であるリサ・スリハニをヒロインに、常夏の国マレーシアのキャストが冬服で臨む、とびきり可愛くてお洒落な王道ラブ・コメディ。

物語の舞台は異国情緒溢れるイスタンブール。男優陣は、本格的な映画出演は初めてのトモTomokをはじめ、アイザットAizat(Talentimeでシャフィー・ナスウィの歌の吹き替え)などのミュージシャン陣、そこに若手実力派のベト･クシャイリーBeto Kusyairyを配役。いまいちハッキリしない男性陣とアクティヴで魅力的なヒロインの対比には思わず引き込まれてしまう。ボスボラス海峡、ブルー・モスク（アヤ・ソフィア）をはじめ、（主人公の苦手な）猫達も多数共演。イスタンブールの普段着の街並も存分に味わえる。2013年大阪アジアン映画祭にて上映。

The story begins with the recollection of Dian, a girl who is visiting Istanbul in order to take some romantic wedding photos in that city…Two years prior, she had been on a plane heading to Istanbul, just like now. Her official purpose had been language studies for 3 months, but her true goal had been: “I will make my boyfriend propose to me!” Living with her boyfriend who was a student of Medical School in Istanbul in his shared apartment, treating him with her delicious home-made food… Dian was planning a strategy to convince her indecisive boyfriend. However, embarrassed by his flat mates’ scrutinizing eyes, her boyfriend told Dian to find an apartment somewhere else. Although disappointed for a little while, she found a dream-like romantic room overlooking the Bosporus Straits, brought her luggage and made herself at home. Then, a stranger named Harris entered the room, and was revealed to be the real resident of the room. Dian had been set up and rented the already-owned room. However, feeling a new romance sprouting in the romantic and historic city of Istanbul, she wondered who she would be married to 2 years on.

This is the latest work by Bernard Chauly, the well-known director of Gol & Gincu (’05) and Goodbye Boys (’06), both of which were introduced at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Featuring one of the most popular Malaysian actresses Lisa Surihani, this is an extremely cute and fancy love comedy with the actors from the land of everlasting summer putting on winter costumes.

The story unfolds in the exotic city of Istanbul. The male cast includes Tomok, who makes his first full-scale movie appearance, Aizat (who dubbed the vocal parts for Mohd Syafie Naswip in Talentime), other well-known musicians, and young proficient actor Beto Kusyairy. The contrast between the rather indecisive guys and the lively and wonderfully charming heroine, accompanied by the scenic Bosporus Straits, Blue Mosque (Hagia Sofia), a handful of cats (of which she is terrified) and the laid-back streets of Istanbul cannot help but enthral the audience. The film was screened at the 2013 Osaka Asian Film Festival.

誰もいないはずなのに、様々な物音が聞こえる…古びた屋敷で恐怖にかられる一人の少女。俳優・音楽活動で知られるピート・テオが初監督した、ホラー仕立てのPSA(公共広告)短編。現地映画館では、映画の始めに予告編と共に上映されているため、本映画祭でも同様に各上映回冒頭に上映。最後に出てくるテロップの意味は「Tolong=Be Quiet」。
